Do you need some (se)cure tips when nostalgia strikes? Do you not know what to do? I’ve been in the same place for seven years now! Here is what I would recommend.
a. Acknowledge the feeling.
Although sometimes you have no clue where it comes from.
b. Try and think logically.
In due course of emotional overwhelmingness (if that is a word,) try and think what spurred the emotion. It is easier said than done, but try and think about it within a day of the emotional surge.
c. Soak up the feeling.
Think of yourself as a emotional sponge. The reason you are feeling nostalgic is because you are wondering and wandering off to ‘emotion-native-land.’ Take deep breaths and really enjoy the feeling. It might seem difficult at first, but it is possible.
For those who practice yoga, you know what this means. I write about it here.
d. Emerge out as more resilient and happy.
Looking back always creates mixed emotions, take it in your stride, enjoy the moment, like every other moment in your life, this too will pass. These feelings are the core of your value-legacy. Recognize it and enjoy it.
e. Be prepared (or not) for the next surge.
Just like the weather, emotions are unpredictable. Enjoy it, maybe recognize the signs, and leave it at that. One need not prepare for it at length. It is not a test, it is just life.
